You have seen the commercials with those adorable all-gray dogs! Those dogs are the Qeimaraner! The Weimaraner breeders are very proud of their “ghost like” dogs and that is reflected in the price for an AKC registered one. They are worth the money though. You will never find a better dog.
The Weimaraner breed was originally created for hunting, but its exact origin is not known. The only early showing of this breed was a 1600’s painting done by Van Dyke. It is believed to have been breed from the short haired pointer crossed with the bloodhound, mastiffs, and the Schweisshund. The name came from the Grand Duke of Weimar. He used them to hunt big game like wolves, wildcats, deer, bears, and mountain lions. It was introduced in America and was not added to the AKC in 1943.
These dogs are very sleek and always have flat, bright, and only grey colored coat. They also have either amber or blue eyes. Their appearance suggests that they are very elegant athletic dogs. The tail, normally, is docked to about fifteen centimeters. Do not let their grace fool you. The Weimaraner breed has speed, stamina, and endurance. They are more than capable of working in the field as a herder or hunting.
The Weimaraner breed is also known for their wonderful ability to be trained. They excel in the sport, agility, and obedience training. They have a lot of energy, which is great for a fast moving family. They are loyal and quick witted, according to the Weimaraner breeders. The breed can be very territorial with their family, which makes them an excellent guard dog. They should be taught right away that being aggressive is not allowed. They may be a little much for families with small children.
They are sometimes affected by common canine health problems. They are usually bloat and hip dysplasia. They can have more serious problems like spinal dysraphism so they must have regular vet visits. If they are completely healthy, then can live to be twelve or thirteen years old.
There are many famous people who have owned a Weimaraner. A few of them are US president Dwight Eisenhower, Brad Pitt, and NYPD Blue star Esai Morales. This dog is so popular because of its beautiful appearance and great demeanor. They are a really great family dog for the “outdoorsy” type family. They can easily be trained to do great things.
